National Identity Management Project: Nigerian Government advised on Implementation

Larry Eiring, President of Gen3C International and Chairman ARMA International Educational Foundation  (AIEF) was in Lagos, recently where he delivered a keynote address on "The Role of Information Management Education in Promoting National Identity and Social Growth" to attendees at the RIMA Foundation Annual Conference.

In his address, Mr. Eiring noted, "Access to and the ability to afford education supporting the effective management of information remain key challenges for the people of Nigeria in their quest to lead all of Africa into the digital age." He further stated, "While Nigeria has done well in advancing its national image, the government must remain focused on building trust with its citizens during the National Identity card implementation.

The significant scepticism of the people, brought about by years of mistrust in their government, must not be overlooked and will need to be addressed properly if the National Identity program is to be embraced by all of the Nigerian society." Attending the opening address was Mr. Chris Onyemenam, Director General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abuja Nigeria, who remarked after Mr. Eiring's address that "Clearly Nigeria has a significant way to go in order to be successful in this endeavor." During the course of the conference, Mr. Eiring also provided educational sessions on Information Governance and on Making the Transition to Electronic Records Management Systems.
